Right, i have a bass, but i dont know what it is, i bought if from my mate's brother and it's my first bass. It's a little bit old so i could do with a new one, but i have one problem...i don't know what basses are good and what arn't. So if you have any suggestions for what i should get please tell me.

i recently bought an SX bass, they are knock offs of fender and are pretty good and pretty cheap. mine was 150 for a jazz bass and i think its much better than any other bass for that price, id say it even comes close to if not matches fender jazz basses. SX makes good quality instruments for cheap. check out rondomusic.net as well. its all good stuff.

What price range are you talking about? There are a few good makes out there that are well priced... Shine aint too bad, Cort, Squier (I personally don't like 'em though!), Yamaha, Stagg, Tanglewood... The list is pretty extensive.
Ibanez 540S7 7 string - £500

Ovation acoustic 5 string bass - £350

I recently started playing bass. I bought myself a Stagg fusion 5 string bass. It cost me around £100 odd ebay and plays really nice.
Have a look on Ebay but try to stick to brand names.

Any bass is good as long as it rumbles the floor boards.
