I'm a finger man. The range of tones you can get from using fingers (and thumbs) is far greater than using pick. But using a pick can be quite handy on some recording sessions.
I've noticed a lot of bassists that use picks live quite often play the pick so it scrapes along the string, getting a pretty unclear tone - especially the case with low slung basses. IMO.
Ibanez 540S7 7 string - £500

Ovation acoustic 5 string bass - £350

I dont play bass, but if I did,id use my fingers. I use a pick most of the time, but it's kinda difficult when you play a song where you have to pluck three strings at a time.

I dont play bass, but my close friend plays, and he says thats strange to use pick, but he uses

I think bassists should only use picks when its fast to get by fingers

EDIT: he prefer fingers

in my opinion, F/S is a LOT easier than a pick for single notes but for chords a pick is better, not only for playing but also if u use ur thumb u can't hear all of the notes becuse there is too much bass. Also my freind who is a complete n00b at bass says that he likes f/s better.
U know ur an emo when u say "the only reson i didn't drown myself in the bath last night was becuse the water was too hot!"

I usually play with a pick.
I've never been able to play with fingers. Not well, at least.

I cant choose because i think some songs just don't sound right with a pick and vice versa

i use fingers because there is much more control and as for stumming i can get quite a nice tone by using the nails of my fingers
