when you record do you mic your amps? do you have a favorite mic to use or do you just use whatever is there? do you have any special techniques for micing amps and having them sound good? i.e. having them in a slant towards the center of the speaker cone.

Well, I don't usually mic my amp, but that is because I don't like the sound. When I get my Marshall, I will start again. But I use a Shure SM57 and I do close up micing (at least that is what I call it). Basically, it is completely staight pointing striaght at the cloth as close as possible whitout touching it. I put it about 2 inches to the left of my top left speaker on my cab. |

for me it sounds better when i put the mic a little far from the amp and raise the volume level. |

Simple as this. A large diapraghm dynamic mic, like a shure sm57/58 will do. Mount the mic about a half foot from the cab, pinted to the centre of the speaker cone, no slants, no angles. Raise the volume if you need to. If your workin in a studio, might be cool to put a decent pop shield between the mic and cab.....suppose that dosent matter though... |

^ that only matters if there is wind coming from whatever u want to record that would cause unwanted noise. I have a shit mic which i put right next to the bottom-left corner of my amp. Obviously micing is important but if ur trying to imrove ur sound, try recording the same guitar part twice and putting each one in one speaker. And using compressors and EQ's somwhere between ur mic and ur recording is also good. |
U know ur an emo when u say "the only reson i didn't drown myself in the bath last night was becuse the water was too hot!"

True dat. But, if your micing a bass amp with a standard SM57 (which i wouldnt use for bass), theres gonna be a little wind from the amp. Pop shields could help a little, i only use them in rare occasions in my studio, but as i said, dosent really matter. |
