When you feel a bit more advanced give 'Closed Casket Requiem' by The Black Dahlia Murder a shot. It's dead simple but it'll really challenge your playing when you get it up to speed

Learning Green Day stuff's fine if you wanna be able to play a whole tune fast, but it won't teach you must in the way of technique and it'll never challenge your playing much either, so it's a bit pointless to learn

Why not go for some old school rock and roll riffs?

AC/DC, Deep Purple

Of course some bits are crazy technical but there are a lot of songs they do with really recognisable easy riffs

Highway to hell, back in black, smoke on the water, black night.

Also, if you are into drop D stuff, Godsmack do some nice simple meat based riffs that you can jam along to nae bother. Vampires is a good one if you jam with a drummer from time to time.

Metallica: Seek and Destroy is a really easy riff and the whole song can be easily broken down so that the beginners mind can take in each little piece so it's not a daunting task looking at the whole song.
There are a couple of bits where you might need to get your chops up but it's mostly ok.. If i can do it, anyone can!!

If a metal band is a 3 piece, chances are the guitarist is very good as he has to hold it all himself. If a 4 piece then it's usually rhythm and lead.... sometimes you get lucky and the rhythm is nice and straight forward... sometimes not...

To get your strumming up to scratch Coheed have one or two songs that the main piece is easy like Favour House Atlantic.
Punky bands are also quite good for simple left / fret hand stuff: Bad Religion, Offspring (old stuff) etc.

Peace and love

Jo

About 3 minutes, when I first picked up guitar :P

No, it took about a week or so, but it is really, really simple
Speaking of Green Day.... Wake Me Up When September Ends can be... Awkward. Not difficult, just awkward. Still fairly easy though.
