Are you able to be as adventerous on a bass as you can be on a normal electric?

I mean, there isnt as many options. And all i seem to hear people do is the same two strings over and over.

But thats proabably just me.

Don't call me gay for this but i actually think the way John taylor from Duran Duran plays the bass was good. If you listen to it, its different to other people.

My gf got me into Duran duran by the way lol.

But are you able to do as much with a bass as you can with a normal electric or acoustic?

Dan

I agree with you John Taylor is a pretty good bass player.

As for exciting bass lines you only have to listen to Flea (RHCP) or some old Mark King (level42) to see what can be done.

Well, i guess that depends on how big and strong your hands are.

I certainly am not as good on the bass as i am on the guitar, which is pretty mediocre.

And my downfall is that i play it like a guitar... zero funk, maximum beef.

lol, i remember playing on the bass thinking woah, just written me a pretty cool "riff" here.... but pink floyd beat me to it! MONEY!

Having spoken to some seriously talented Bass Players I get the impression that they think in a totally different way to a Guitarist. They see their Role in a Band as a far more Groove related thing. By that I mean that a Bass Players greatest Alie in a band is the Drummer. You get those two Locked In and delivering the Goods and you are on to something VERY Good!!

There is so much more that can be done too. One of my favourite players is a Guy called Bob Skeet. When you hear him lock thongs down with The Drummer, you're hearing something very special, then.....just as you think it can't get much better.....You'll find that he is also putting in the third part of a Harmony Line that the Twin Guitars have developed.

Another Guy who is phenominal in a Minimalistic way is a player called Andy Pyle.

I always think of Bass and Drums as the Foundations on which others can build. And as history shows.....Build something on Foundations that are anything but Good.....and you have the perfect receipe for disaster!!!
"Drunk" is feeling sophisticated even though you can't say it!

you can do loads with a bass

listen to bruce foxton (the Jam) or Jack Bruce (Cream) or John Entwhistle (The Who) or even Lemmy and Phil Lynott - and then guys like Marcus Miller, Pino Palladino, Victor Wooten and Bill Clements (who only has one hand)

Playing the right notes in the wrong order since 1994
