alternate picking!

hi i am having trouble picking up and down has anyone got any ideas or tips to help me start

try to hold the pick so you only have the tip exposed (you'll have to vary the amount until it works for you). next learn economy of motion. this simply is that you don't have to move you wrist very much to accomplish what you want. with some practice you'll find that the pick doesn't have to go much past the string at all and this will increase your picking speed and accuracry. also this will help when you go to the next string. people are always amazed at how little movement i use (fretting hand as well) to play fast runs. learn to pick every note. i know that many modern players have lazy picking techniques but you'll be happier in the long run if you learn to do this.

Very good advice.

Perhaps not directly related to your question, but I would recommend playing some reggae. Not only does it improve your rhythm, but it helps with 'picking-up'. At the very least, it is great fun to play.
