It is a little file that contains code for musical effects, such as chorus, delay, reverb etc. A VSTi is a Virtual instrument. You can route a MIDI file to play thru a virtual instrument, converting the MIDI to "real" sounds. Thus, backing tracks, drum tracks etc. are easy to make. -Mick.
