Hey everyone.

New here...missed out the introduction section middle man and thought i would role in with the big guns! :P

Soooo... impulsively bought myself a crackin' 1997 Fender American Standard Telecaster off e-bay (eep!) a few weeks back.. i'm not a geetar wizard, but i feel i know a fair amount. However i found myself ever so slightly doubting my genuine Tele. I hear there are some axe genius' present among the rabble so i just thought if anyone knew of anything i could look out for?? the serial number seems to add up but there are little niggly bits that give me doubt!

Thanks for your time guys.
Scott ;)

i kind of doubt anyone would forge a 97 tele ^o) . check the fender logo sticker and the guitar in general. perhaps you can take it to a guitar store and compare it to a tele they have in stock. what makes you believe that it may be a fake?
and now for something completely different

Well initially its a maple neck version... but for some reason it is orange ^o) lol.. im not sure whether its just in certain light but its definatly orange in colour, but i did read some where that they get coated in different stuff so maybe that has something to do with it..or over time it has just faded in colour? but my mate has the same guitar just a year later and the machine heads, string trees, jack plug and neck plate all seem different... and i didnt think there would be that much difference in a single year of manafacturing...
like i said i think i might just be paranoid!!
Either way.... how good is the sound of the teles!!! awesome.

There are alot of fake guitars going around on Ebay. I have seen some fake Fender's, but only a few. I have some questions for you....

How much did you pay for it?
Does it look new? (Like it could have been made recently, not in 1997)
Which eBay seller did you buy it from and where was he located?

Hey bullet..

I payed a straght £400 for it includin delivery, so was more like £380 for the guitar (which means im now hoping its not a fake!) Its in good condition but the guy was biggin up the condition saying it had never been gigged and only used in the home and he had cherished it etc etc... he was a member called "johnotherise" or something similar, from scotland in the band called "the rise".

I got some new developments on it the other day however.

I ended up emailing some guy from an online guitar shop as i purchased a new scratchplate for my axe but it never fit, then i ended up sending some pictures to this guy and he said the plate on my axe currently was not a fender plate, slightly differnet shape. then after many pictures it turns out that the bridge was a squier bridge as it had the 5 screw set up not the 3 screw like the official fender.the serial number adds up on the neck but im still not sure.

Any thoughts?

sounds kind of fishy to me. if its a squire bridge (try to verify this) then it may be a squire body with a fender neck attached. this is just as bad as an outright fake. it may be that something happend to the original body and the guy figured he can make his money back by swapping out bodies. at the least the bridge isn't original and that should have been disclosed. fender does use that same type of bridge on some newer models so make sure that it not a replacement. i would e-mail the seller with your concerns and probably return the guitar.

Yeah i think im getting more and more certain its a squier bridge. Theres quite a few things that dont add up tbh. I just emailed the seller tonight to try and get some answers about it, for all i know he might be none the wiser about it but its worth a shot. and like you said if he has switched some things around and altered bits hes not likely to admit it now since he has my money!! but again like you said he didnt say anything about it when selling, it all seemed legit or i wouldnt of bought it obviously. i dont use ebay much so im not completely sure where buyers stand when purchasing things under false pratenses. i would be happy returning the guitar because theres another few telecaster currently on ebay that look like crackers! ;)

manwobobbo pretty much covered everything I was going to say there! He might have a Squire body on a Fender neck.... or he could have just used Squire parts as replacement Fender parts to be cheap and not told you this in the auction. I would see if I could return it if I were you :)

Yeah im not sure what im going to do. The seller still hasnt got back to me yet so what do you think i should do if he doesnt ever get back to me?? im less and less happy with the guitar to be honest and i like the idea of buying a new one now that im a little older and a little wiser ;)
But cheers guys been helpfull! and i am plannin to stick around on the forums i like the vibes i get from it, so good work.
Scott.

Did you pay with paypal? There is always a way to get your money back with them... though it's sometimes a pain in the neck to deal with. If you are that desperate to get your money back though... contact the seller, tell him you wish to return it and that you are reporting it to paypal. Just file a complaint with them and say the item was incorrectly described. Then once you have the money back (could take a while!) send him the guitar back :)

I hope it goes well for you and I'm glad to hear you are going to be sticking around :D

just wondering if you don't have access to a good guitar store? personally a guitar is something that i won't ever buy over the net (unless it was dirt cheap). i feel that its important to play a guitar before buying. no matter how nice a guitar is it may not be right for you. i had a les paul that fell into my lap probably the most expensive guitar i've owned but ii just didn't suit me and i didn't end up keeping it. i occasionally go guitar shopping with students and will go thru 10-12 guitars before saying try this one and see what you think (yeah guitar center loves me). thats for a $150-$200 guitar for a grand i may play every candidate in the place twice before narrowing it down.

I don't really care if my guitar is fake or not, as long as it plays/sounds good
