Hi all, I am in the process of completely overhauling my rig and am considering whether to use effects, and what effects to use. In the past my setup has always been very simple as in guitar - amp (I had a wha for a while, but I only really used it to boost the mids a bit, so it was more of an aah than a wah.) I really want to experiment with different sounds but as I have never used effects I dont know where to start etc. When I decide on an amp, it will be something with a decent distortion chanel, so I wont need anything to boost that, however it would be nice to be able to get that sikth-esqe "glassy" yet massive clean sound and also to have a more interesting mid distortion sound...so basically I am after something that will enhance my sound a bit but does not sound overly electronic. Can anyone suggest anything I might try? Also I was told once that effects, even when switched off affect the amps dry tone...does anyone know is this correct? AND does anyone know what the difference is between using the effects loop and sticking the effects between the guitar and amp. PS, sorry if this is a stupid question. |

not stupid so don't worry. your fx loop is internal and depending on your amp will place the fx in different spots in the sound chain. genreally between the preamp and the power amp section. the difference in sound will depend on what you use. when you use fx in front of the preamp (guitar into amp) it can be noisier especially if you use a distortion pedal. anyway you go will yield somewhat different results. overdrive and distortion tend to be better if used up front. time fx like chorus and delay work better in the loop. some fx units may cause some tone changes that tends to be a crap shot. better units are less likely to be noticeable. if you use active pickups then it wil be less of a problem as well. as for suggestions, i'm thinking a multi-fx unit might be the way for you to go. the better ones are progamable and will yield some interesting sounds. |

Thanks for the advice, Im going to go down the route of individual effects, i think a multi effects pedal may be a bit of a waste for me as I cant really see myself using more than 1 or 2 effects...im bidding on a line6 echo park at the mo, ill let you know how I get on. |

i only use individual fx myself just figured that if you wanted to experiment then multi would be a good way to go. |
