Hi all,

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread to discuss different writing techniques (assuming I am not the only song writer) as I have developed my technique myself and have no idea how anyone else outside my band does it...here is what I normally do...

1. I have a chord progression and very basic rhythm in mind..this normally takes anywhere between a few minutes and a few months to develop and at any given time I will have a few half baked ideas floating about.

2. I either record the above progression or tab it on guitar pro and refine it further.

3. I either write a variation of this chord progression that harmonises with the original, a lead part or whatever I think will sound good...I rarely have both guitars doing the same thing except with chugging parts.

4. Refine 1st part so it fits seamlessly with the new part.

5. record or tab over the original progression.

6. Phrase/section is complete...now one of 3 things happen, I either know what I want to happen next and I repeat 1-5 on the next part, or it goes in the "work in progress" bucket ready to be stuck onto other parts I have written OR it goes with something i have already written and I stick those parts together.

7. Whole song is refined by me and sent to our other songwriter for his feedback. Then to the rest of the band for their input.

Thats how I do it...what do you do?

Well at the moment I usually come up with the lead part first (though if I can't come up with anything I will write a chord progression first and try a lead over that) Then I will put that into Guitar Pro, make sure it all fits and makes sense. Then I will usually play the Guitar Pro lead tab whilst playing chords behind it. One I have the right chords, I will add them in on the second guitar. Then it's just a matter of coming up with different parts of the song (which usually happens fast after the original idea) and structuring it, then finally recording it.

just got a zoom so i may alter the way i do things after i have it all figured out. i have a riff bank as i come up with things (usually just dickiing around) i play it over and over until i'm happy with it. i then think whether any thing else i've got fits with the new one if so then i'll put them together. eventually i have a song. leads etc i add once i have a basic rythem completed . in a band situation i may present some ideas to the others and see what develops that works well at times and fails miserably at others.

as an aside i do teach a basic song writting method to students. i tell them to pick 3 chords and then only use those to put together a song. i don't expect anyone to come up with anything brilliant (but you'd be suprised at how good some turn out) but i stress that making your own music is the best reason to play.
and now for something completely different
