looking at an add in a guitar mag today and came across a vintage listing. 1961 strat mint. ok that was the year i was born and i'd love to have one - $35,000. after gaining my composure it made me think about what i'd be willing to pay for a guitar. even if i won the lottery tonight i just can't see myself spending that kind of money. (the 61 SG/LP was a "cough" more reasonable $17,000). which leads me to ask what everyone thinks. 1-if you had the money how much would you be willing to spend at most? 2-since we live in the real world how much is the most you really would be willing to spend? for me 1- i just can't imagine spending more than $5000-6000 on a guitar no matter what it was. somehow i just don't envision a more expensive guitar sounding better. vintage is cool but i'd be afraid to play it for fear of devaluing it. not what i want from a guitar. 2- so far i haven't spent more than $500 and i don't see that changing by alot. i may go up to $1000 but i'd really have to love the guitar and figure i wouldn't ever need to repace it. that may not seem like alot but with some patience i've always been able to find great sounding guitars for $500 or less (more often less). this is why i often preach to beginners that you don't need to spend a fortune, just know what to look for. |

I always think the same thing when I see those types of articles, though I suppose if you were the sort of person thatwould spend $20000+ on a guitar you wouldnt gig it, you would probably buy it as a sort of playable ornament. so 1. if I had the money I wouldnt spend more than $5-6000 (about £2500-3000ish) and then it would have to be good, possibly custom made. 2. When/if I start getting a decent number of gigs in, my eyes are on a custom blackmachine that will cost around £2000...Not because there is anything wrong with my ibanez, but because I am a snob and want a fully custom guitar. |

Well the most I have spent on a guitar was around £1000. The guitar I own now only cost £500. The most I think I would ever spend is around £2000 on a guitar... maybe a bit more on amps/effects |
