Hello everyone and thankyou so much for taking the time to read this! I have been playing a battered old Stagg guitar for years now because I have never needed a good guitar. I have practised with bands borrowing my mates guitars and now I am about to join quite a large band in my area and I am in need of a good electric guitar. It will need to be good enough for gigs! I am setting myself a budget of about £300 (preferably less) and I have NO IDEA what one to get!!! There are hundreds of guitars out there and I am clueless when it comes to guitars!! I just play them!! I play punk and fast ska music if that helps. I play rhythm mainly. I don't play solos really. Its mainly going to be used to punk chords, palm muted power chords and clean fast ska music. So far I like the look of ibanez guitars. I don't like the feel of Les Paul guitars. I dont like those really metally looking guitars with spikes on! I would like something a bit different to a basic Strat model though. Please help me!! I am clueless! Any advice is kindly taken!! Many thanks!! You may be responsible for the next guitar I buy! |

at the top of this section is a sticky for a guitar guide this may help you. personally i'd go for something like an Epiphone SG. since you are just playing chords for the most part you won't need anything fancy. Ibanez does make a couple of inexpensive models that don't have whammy bars (i assume you won't really need that either) |

gotta disagree dave fast neck and metal sound isn't what he's looking for. an SG style guitar is used by many bands that do the same style of music he's refering to.

I agree with monwobobbo.... Epiphone SG or LP is most suited to what you want to do and your budget. You have to stop being so biased about your Ibanez's David!!!

If you like the look of ibanez then i got an ibanez rgr321ex that is brilliant for me. It is good for punk music and i got mine from the live music shop in peterborough. If you don't live in the area i guess it is no good but it only cost me £270. (i think i may have gotten a discount because i was being taught by GizzButt who is friends with the store manager. You might as well check it out any way. |

Thanks for all your replies. I have heard that ibanez are very metal. I do like the epiphone SG but its a bit cheap. Its only about £200 pounds and im worried that might be too cheap. Im willing to spend another 100pounds to get something a bit better. I really am clueless though! |

Well to be honest.. in that price range, they don't differ too much, your £100 won't make that much of a difference. I think the Epiphone Les Paul Standard is a little over £300... if you could stretch your budget a little? I have personally tried one of those and they aren't bad at all And Les Pauls have to be the most widely used guitars in punk.....

you can always put better pickups in the SG with the extra cash. i've played a couple of epi's SGs and they are pretty decent. |

I absolutely will not buy an epiphone EVARRRR!!! I tried a 400 dollar one out at a store and it was worse than my BC rich Bronze They are cheaply made and will last you about 3 monthsHold me to it The ibanez's have slimmer necks so it would make it easier to reach and get to the strings... |

I hate low end Epiphones.... the cheap SGs and the "Special" series.... but the LP Standards and Customs and some of the SGs aren't too bad at all |

i'll add a new option that may be great for you. Ibanez ART300. this is a LP style guitar but the PU selecter switch is in a different spot. tried one a few weeks back and it was pretty good (looks cool to). |
